"In Reading between the Signs, Anna Mindess provides a new perspective on a poorly understood culture, American Deaf culture. With the collaboration of three distinguished Deaf consultants, Mindess explores the implication of cultural differences at the intersection of the Deaf and hearing worlds. This new, third edition of her classic and best-selling text covers several new topics of great interest to activists and interpreters, including teaming with Deaf interpreters and cultivating a "Deaf heart." Vastenmielinen alku, mutta loppua kohti ihan okei

Kirjan alku on todella kamalaa luettavaa. Kulttuurienvälisen viestinnän alasta annetaan hyvin vastenmielinen kuva, jota havainnollistetaan kliseisillä esimerkeillä, eikä tietoja varsinaisesti pohjusteta lähdeviitteillä. Loppua kohti kirja muuttuu luettavammaksi, kun päästään yleisemmältä tasolta lähemmäs tulkkien käytännön työtä, ja siinä vaiheessa selviääkin, ettei kyse ole suoranaisesti akateemisesta kirjasta, vaikka tätä nyt yliopiston kurssilla meille luetettiinkin. Jos haluaa perehtyä kulttuurienväliseen viestintään akateemiselta kannalta, on ehkä parempi lukea jotain muuta.
