What stayed: the moor that looks bare and is really "covered wi' growin' things." The key Mary finds only because she fed the robin first. The gardener's line, "take it, child, and make it come alive." And Colin at the end, walking "as strongly and steadily as any boy in Yorkshire."

The book I expected was a story about a garden making a sickly boy well. The book I got is quieter than that. It is about locked rooms, and the children who come back to them. Everyone here is hiding something they believe makes them unlovable, and the garden does not so much fix them as give them somewhere to be seen.
