Thomas Olde Heuvelt: Hex (2016)

"Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock …

Surprising Twists and Turns

Wow, what a riveting book! I finished this in three days, because the suspense was relentless.

Hex is about a town living under a curse, where evil lies waiting behind the secrets kept regarding an ancient witch, bound in chains, who wanders the streets and waits.

I was pleasantly surprised at the turns the plot took. Thomas Olde Heuvelt is fast becoming a favorite author of chills.

Hidden Pictures tells the story of a young adult girl, Mallory, recently rehabilitated, who becomes a live-in babysitter to young Teddy, whose pictures begin to tell a story, and Mallory finds herself struggling to solve their purpose. I absolutely loved this book and found it hard to put down from the get-go.

Elizabeth Hand, Ellen Datlow, Joyce Carol Oates, Karen Heuler, Benjamin Percy: When Things Get Dark (Hardcover, 2021, Titan Books)

A collection of new and exclusive short stories inspired by, and in tribute to, Shirley …

Review of 'When Things Get Dark' on 'Goodreads'

As a fan of Shirley Jackson, I'd have to say that Ellen Datlow curated a most excellent collection of intriguing stories from an array of contemporary authors.

I was sad to have finished the last story, but now I know whom to go to for more.

Catriona Ward: The Last House on Needless Street (Hardcover, 2021, Viper)

Review of 'The Last House on Needless Street' on 'Goodreads'

I picked this book from the local store shortly after finishing Sundial, because I really enjoyed Catriona Ward's writing.

This was another thrilling page-turner about a young girl's disappearance in rural Washington state and the people who are involved in solving the mystery.

Catriona Ward is a force of nature behind the written word. She's fast becoming one of my favorite authors.

Thomas Olde Heuvelt: Echo (2022, Doherty Associates, LLC, Tom)

Review of 'Echo' on 'Goodreads'

This is probably one of the best books I've read this year, for personal reasons. It has outdoor adventure, horror, humor, and gay characters who aren't coming out or finding their first love, they're just gay and have lives. Thank you, Thomas Olde Heuvelt!

Gertrude Chandler Warner: The Boxcar Children (The Boxcar Children, No. 1) (1989, Albert Whitman & Company)

One warm night four children stood in front of a bakery. no one knew them. …

Review of 'The Boxcar Children (The Boxcar Children, No. 1)' on 'Goodreads'

This book was one of a handful that helped me graduate from children's books. It's was kind of a young adult or tween fiction of its time, and it was easily one of the favorite books of my childhood.

Clive Cussler: Raise the Titanic! (2004, Berkley)

Review of 'Raise the Titanic!' on 'Goodreads'

This was the first paperback adult fiction I'd ever read at age 12, I think. It was a fun work of adventure fiction that was a great transition from Jules Verne to contemporary fiction.
